ACT II SCENE 3

Having set out to free Pamina from ‘Sarastro’s clutches’ at the behest of the Queen of the Night, Tamino must now undergo a series of trials in order to be purified. He is accompanied in his initiation by the birdcatcher Papageno. Two Priests tell them the rules: first of all, they must resist all women’s wiles by silence (as is well known). Will Papageno manage to keep quiet? O weh!

TAMINO
A dreadful night! Papageno, are you still with me?

PAPAGENO
Yes, of course!

TAMINO
Where do you think we are now?

PAPAGENO
Where? Well, if it weren’t so dark, I’d tell you – but as things stand . . .
Oh woe!

TAMINO
What is it?

PAPAGENO
I don’t feel quite right about all this!

TAMINO
You’re scared, by the sound of it.

PAPAGENO
Not scared exactly, but I’ve got cold shivers running up my spine.
Oh woe!

TAMINO
What’s the matter now?

PAPAGENO
I thinking I’m coming down with a touch of fever.

TAMINO
Shame on you, Papageno! Be a man!

PAPAGENO
I wish I were a girl!
Oh! Oh! Oh! My last hour has struck!

SPEAKER
Strangers, what do you seek or demand of us? What prompts you to enter our walls?

TAMINO
Friendship and love.

SPEAKER
Are you prepared to fight for them with your life?

TAMINO
Yes!

SPEAKER
Even if death were to be your fate?

TAMINO
Yes!

SPEAKER
Prince, there is still time to withdraw. One step further, and it will be too late.

TAMINO
Let the precept of wisdom be my victory, and Pamina, the tender maiden, my reward.

SPEAKER
Will you undergo every trial?

TAMINO
Every one!

SPEAKER
Give me your hand!
There!

SECOND PRIEST
Before you say any more, permit me a few words with this stranger.

SPEAKER
On you too, prince, the gods impose a salutary silence; without this you are both lost. You will see Pamina, but may not speak to her; this is the beginning of your time of trial.

SECOND PRIEST AND SPEAKER
Beware of women’s wiles:
This is the first duty of the Brotherhood!
Many a wise man has let himself be beguiled;
He erred, and did not realise it.
In the end he was deserted,
His trust repaid with contempt!
In vain he wrung his hands:
Death and despair were his reward.

PAPAGENO
Hey, let’s have lights here! Some light!

JAN ASSMANN

Turning to Die Zauberflöte, one is astonished at how precisely its structure corresponds to the conception of the mysteries held by the Viennese Lodge. The opera is divided into two acts, which in their turn are split into two sections of roughly equal length: in each case, a sequence of vocal numbers and scenes of spoken dialogue (first and third sections) is followed by a wholly sung finale without speech (second and fourth sections). The two sections of the second act contain the initiation ritual proper, which, in the light of the Masonic theory of the mysteries, we can see as representing the ‘lesser’ and ‘greater’ mysteries. Papageno is present for the lesser mysteries, but not for the greater, which concern matters of life and death and the final revelation of the truth, because only Tamino, who is destined to rule, is allowed access to these.

After I initially commented I clicked the -Notify me when new feedback are added- checkbox and now every time a remark is added I get 4 emails with the identical comment. Is there any approach you may take away me from that service? Thanks!
